The Global Health Body Sounds Warning Over Severe Lack of Obesity Medications

Under a tenth of patients who could benefit from GLP-1 drugs including Wegovy are able to get them, warns the World Health Organization as it releases its initial recommendations on the medications.

Given over a billion individuals worldwide now living with obesity, it is urging more widespread and fairer availability to GLP-1 medication.

According to forecasts, more than two billion will be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The latest guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be treated with thorough and continuous support," remarked WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are major hurdles to broad availability to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing substantial weight, explains the organization.

GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity

Despite the current most optimistic case, the manufacturing of such drugs might only reach approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, per the WHO.

The guideline calls on nations and manufacturers to expand access, via approaches such as voluntary licensing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the core ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several nations in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Injections Operate

GLP-1 drugs mimick a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and enhance satiety so individuals eat less.

People typically start to lose weight within a few weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Studies indicates patients may put most of the weight back on a year later of halting the medication, because their normal food cravings return.

Being above a healthy weight raises your likelihood for developing medical conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Obesity affects individuals in countries worldwide and was responsible for 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
