The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
